The 2011 VMAs - Ladies Night?

Last night MTV hosted their annual Video Music Awards (VMAs) live in Los Angeles, California. While over the past few years the VMAs have not been the most enjoyable of award shows, this year MTV stepped up their game and finally booked some kick ass performances. Really no one watches the VMAs because they care about who wins, MTV doesn’t even promote music videos anymore (sigh), this show is all about the performance and they finally delivered.
Lady GaGa/Jo Calderone
The show kicked off with with an incredible performance by the one and only Lady GaGa. Standing on stage in drag as Jo Calderone - she/he delivered a wild monologue that left a lot of the audience confused/nervous about where it could possibly be going (just check the faces of Adele & Katie Holmes you’ll see what I mean). In true GaGa fashion though as soon as she/he sits down at that piano the musical genius begins and she/he delivers an amazing performance per usual. Her voice, her style, BRIAN MAY from Queen!?, everything about this performance of You & I was UH-MAZING.
Jay-Z and Kanye hit the stage with their new hit Otis. This apparently was supposed to be a surprise - but everyone knew it was happening. It was a strong performance by the Watch the Throne duo, but nothing over the top or very notable. Chris Brown also hit the stage and while he had super super sexay dance moves that I only hope my man to be some day will possess, and he certainly entertained I didn’t really get the point? Was it just a cool dance break? The flying? It left me with questions & kind of under-whelmed. Pitt Bull, typical nothing really to say there either. Basically most of the male performances were typical, lack luster and well like I said - Under-Whelming.
Young the Giant
However, there were two fabulous male performances of the night. One was by a little known group - who I have loved since their album dropped this past October: Young the Giant. It was one of the most passionate performances of the night fo sho. There was an astonishing energy behind it, and I think they gained more than a few fans with their song - My Body. The other outstanding performance was Lil Wayne How to Love. While yes it was hard to understand because of all the bleeping out of words, there is no question that when Weezy gets up on stage he commands attention and you gotta respect it. He’s on the top of his game with his album Carter IV dropping today - can’t wait to check it out.
On to the real stars of the night though, the ladies. I already pointed out the FAB-U-LOUS-NESS that was Lady GaGa, but there were some other real show-stoppers. Beyonce, as always strutted her stuff, but really the best thing about this performance was the revealing of the baby-bump, not much was gonna top that news except for maybe one thing - and that one thing was Adele. Without question the best best best performance of the night. The simplicity of the beautiful performance was unmatched. Standing with a microphone and a simple black dress on Adele’s voice rang out across the theater touching every true music fan in that audience. Her soul, her pain, her life was poured out for everyone to see and that is what makes not only a star, but a legend. Adele gave chills to everyone watching - and not one other performance can say that.

There was also a tribute to Miss B. Spears herself, the music video queen<3 dancers of all ages got up there to rock it out to all of Brit’s songs it was adorable. There was of course a tribute to the late great Amy Winehouse. It was simple and really highlighted the great talent that she was - it was tastefully done, simple, straight and to the point. Overall the VMAs were a great night of music television.

Hurricane - Bob Dylan

Shelter from the Storm - Bob Dylan

Have You Ever Seen the Rain - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Rain - Madonna

Get to Know - Grace Potter & The Nocturnals

Grace Potter & The Nocturnals (GPN) - maybe you've heard of them? You probably know at least one song - well kind of. I feel like that's the general consensus when GPN comes up, however they are definitely a band you should get to know and make sure to add to your iPod.

According to their web site, "Grace Potter & The Nocturnals are like a modern day version of Tina Turner stroking the microphone in a spangled mini dress while fronting the Rolling Stones circa Sticky Fingers." This description is pretty dead on - there is no way to really classify this band, they fall into a number of genres which is one of the main reasons I am a fan.

Their latest (and third) album was released this past Spring and is self titled, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. It is without question their best to date. It reflects a band who has discovered what they can really do & the potential greatness that is to come. The album possess soul, amazing guitar solos and a classic rock and roll flair that is rarely heard on records today. Maybe it's the new lineup (GPN recently added bassist Catherine Popper & rhythm guitarist Benny Yurco to the crew), maybe it's the way lead singer Grace Potter channels the soulfulness of Janis Joplin. Whatever it is - it's working this record is Music Magic.

While Paris is their 1st single off this album, I'll leave you with my favorite tune off of it - Medicine:

I'll be seeing them live in CT on September 30th at my Alma Mater UConn<3 since their NYC show sold out so quickly. Prepare for an update on GPN following their show.

Have You Ever Heard Of: Oh Ruin

While reading up on one of the many blogs that I subscribe to I ran across this little diddy: Oh Ruin.
Lead Singer: Eoin O'Ruainigh
Any music fan knows that you could literally spend all day (every day) discovering new bands. To be completely honest, most of the time the discoveries aren't worth the 3 minutes you spent listening to their track, but that is not Oh Ruin. They are definitely worth the 3 minutes and beyond.

Lead singer Eoin O'Ruainigh's (whose surname is where the band derived their name) has a voice with texture that carries both soothing and bluesy tones. Oh Ruin's sound has a classic Irish/UK folksy twist to it - and speaks of love & mischief. The message here is hit the play button below& CHECK OUT OH RUIN you won't be disappointed.

Paul McCartney & Decca Bury the Hatches

I'm sure you've heard by now but Paul McCartney recently has signed to Decca Records - the record company who famously denied the Beatles a record contract some 50 odd years ago (can we say biggest regret EVER).

Any way McCartney won't be recording a record with Decca but rather will be working with them on the score for McCartney's first ballet (his daughter is also on this project) - Oceans Kingdom - which is set to debut on September 22nd in NYC.

This happens to be my birthday so for those of you still looking for gift ideas look no further (kidding - or am I?)

Nick Ashford...

Music lost a legendary song writer today, Nick Ashford 1942-2011, he was 70 years old. You may think you don't know who Nick Ashford, but believe me you do. He wrote the song "Aint No Mountain High Enough," with his wife, Valerie Simpson. If you have never sung that song at the top of your lungs, well then you're lieing. Their first major hit together was, "Let's Go Get Stoned," sung by Ray Charles...

Together Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson released 16 albums, he'll be missed.

Teenage Angst

This little diddy is inspired by my bff. She and I lovingly refer to the songs from pop/punk rock past (aka middle school high school years) as teenage angst songs <3. You know what I'm talking about - those emo songs you couldn't help but love back then - and maybe still secretly do. We both are avid pandora listeners to get through the work day - and whenever a good teenage angst song comes through the speakers we have to let the other one know.

Examples of great Teeanage Angst songs include:
And the mother of all Teenage Agnst songs:

Anyway you see where I'm going with this. What are some of your fav teenage angst tunes?

Guitar Hero

Jimi Hendrix, 1969, Woodstock Stage

Not sure if you're aware but today exactly 42 years ago - Jimi Hendrix gave the longest performance of his career (2 hours of glourious tunes) at the last day of Woodstock. Not with Jimi Hendrix and the Experience but and I quote,  "Gypsy Sun and Rainbows, for short it's nothin’ but ‘A Band Of’ Gypsies." So let us pay homage to this performance shall we....

Music Video Junkie

I must admit I am a music video JUNKIE. I realize that many people today don't really watch music videos anymore, but let me tell you - you're missing out. I usually use the video to judge the song/artist a little... I just can't help myself. Anyway I wanted to share some music videos that premiered this week...

Lady GaGa - You & I -
To be honest I don't get it. I don't get her really either. This doesn't stop me from jamming out to her but it needed to be said.

Kid Cudi - No One Believes Me -
Clearly capitalizing on the Vampire Trend (#ilovetrueblood)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie -
Is it just me or are they totally channeling the Beatles and do I totally love it -YES

The Kooks - Junk of The Heart (Happy) -
Classic Kooks <3

Ninjasonik Feat. the Party Squad - Mosh Pit
Hope you like to party

The Greatest aka the Beatles

Every great music blog in the making should kick off with The Beatles right? RIGHT. The Beatles are one of the best - if not the best bands out there. They have inspired tons of today's artists like Kanye, Justin Timberlake, The Red Hot Chili Peppers - I could go on but why bother. They don't just inspire artists of today but they inspire people like you and me and this guy - Lee Gingold - clearly gets what the Beatles are all about...

This video was posted to a really cool site - WHY MUSIC MATTERS - you should definitely check it out. So what bands inspire you?

What's Your Drug of Choice?

So for the past - forever - I have been claiming that I am going to start a blog. I'm pretty big at claiming I'm going to do things but don't have a very high follow-through rate. My friend Caroline knows this all too well. I've been bugging her for roughly 6 months to help me come up with an idea for this sucker but I finally got it.

Everyone has a drug of choice right? While in the past I may have had some dubious ways to answer that question I now have one shared by many... Music. I consider myself a pretty big music junkie with a very eclectic taste. If you check out my iPod you would think it belonged to a schizophrenic. One minute I could be jamming out to Incubus and the next I'm listening to some country super star like Miranda Lambert - like I said eclectic.

Luckily I live in one of the best cities in the world to be a music fan in - New York Citayy. So that pretty much sums up with this blog is going to be about my drug of choice - Music with some NYC thrown in the mix. Feel free to comment and let me know if you know of any good shows going on!

So until this thing really gets kicked off I'll leave you with my jam out of the day (and the hottie of the day):
